Today Tab
I was hired by Apple to create animated marquees for the newly launched Today Tab. The animated loops would be featured on the front page of the App Store each day. I had to bring out each app’s personality, while still working within the Apple aesthetic. The goal was to make something that felt curated and editorial.
Developer Commentary
One of the categories the Apple editorial team created was something called Developer Commentary. The Developer Commentary column was meant to give consumers an insider’s peek into an aspect of new game, including: explaining how the game works, showing a tough level or Easter egg, explaining the thinking of the design.
Initial style frames for the first two features: Donut County and Playdead’s Inside.
I used Cinema4D and After Effects to recreate scenes from gameplay from scratch. This would give us complete control of the layout and loop point for the marquee.
For the final look, we went with bold text and imagery from the games.
Code
“Code” was a story for the Today Tab that would showcase the top apps for learning how to code. The editorial and art department teams wanted to show the word “Code” being built in a creative and dynamic way.
Game Soundtracks
Gaming is a big part of the App Store experience. The editorial team thought it would be valuable to run a column about game soundtracks. It would include interviews with soundtrack composers to provide insight into their process. For this project, I needed to create a marquee that would capture both the music and interview aspect of the story.
Exploratory style frames. The art department liked the idea of doing something colorful and fun.
